THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951)
I still think this enjoyable adventure story holds up, though the story of its shooting in the Congo (including possible accidental cannibalism) is now at least as famous as the movie itself.
CASABLANCA (1942)
Maybe the classic Old Hollywood movie, made at the height of World War II and maybe one big metaphor for the war itself.
THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (1948)
A story where three very grizzled dudes find gold in the wilderness and it drives them all nuts. A manly man’s parable about greed.
THE MALTESE FALCON (1941)
A movie that launched legendary careers and an entire classic genre of film, and is also pretty fun in its own right.
