MIRROR (1975)

Andrei Tarkovsky’s non-linear exploration of his own family and childhood is full of unforgettable images that work better if you sort of let them wash over you instead of trying to make sense of a plot or whatever.

SOLARIS (1972)

A heavily influential Soviet sci-fi epic that takes a lot of patience from the viewer to get to its basic message: no matter how far we go, we’ll never be able to escape our own humanity.

An extremely depressing Soviet World War II movie that is also probably a great work of art.
