SERGEANT YORK (1941)

I have some thoughts about our American entry’s take on the intersection and patriotism, and also on the completely ridiculous accents basically everyone in this movie has. A lot of people like it though!

ARCHANGEL (1990)

Canada’s entry is an early work from one of the most idiosyncratic of the internationally known modern directors, Guy Maddin, very loosely inspired by real events, in the style of a very early sound film from circa-1930, for reasons.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (1965)

An epic of Russian history that’s more interested in its central love dodecahedron than it is in Russian history, a fact that leaves me wondering what the point of it all is.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (1943)

A truly amazing movie that takes a negative stereotype and helps us understand him, in beautiful technicolor, with some of the most interesting performances I’ve seen, all made in England during the Blitz.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930)

Perhaps the ultimate anti-War movie, its battle scenes represented a quantum leap for movies. Some of the smaller things may not hold up, but the message does.
