Perhaps the definitive modern action movie, and also maybe the one with the action sequences that I have loved most over the years, which somehow also has literally many treatises’ worth of material going on just below the surface.

MAGNOLIA (1999)
If not the best movie from director Paul Thomas Anderson, probably the definitive one, following a bazillion characters over one day in the San Fernando Valley. Also frogs rain from the sky.
ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER (1999)
A meticulous documentary that presents a lot of information I didn’t know about the darkest moment in Olympic history.
GALAXY QUEST (1999)
A Star Trek parody that sort of lucked into an all-timer of a cast, now essentially beloved as an actual example of the thing it was parodying.
THE BEST MAN (1999)
I’ve watched a lot of movies that were aggressively not my thing since starting this blog, but oh boy, this was a rough one.
ELECTION (1999)
A biting satire about a high school election that understands America better than any movie actually about national politics.
THE SIXTH SENSE (1999)
This horror hit was known for its final twist, but somehow still holds up 21 years later.
