A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (1935)

The Marx Brothers reinvented comedy for the sound era, but had to tone down their sheer anarchy (a little) to score their biggest hit.

BEST IN SHOW (2000)

An extremely droll documentary that features many of my favorite comedy folks and also some dogs.

ALMOST FAMOUS (2000)

This comedy/drama about a teenage Rolling Stone writer hanging out with a 1970s rock band is probably the 2000 movie I’ve watched the greatest number of times.

LA REGLE DE JEU (1939)

A French masterpiece about upper-class romantic games, played blithely as the world teeters on disaster.

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL (1992)

My favorite Christmas movie, bar none, featuring Michael Caine as Scrooge and Gonzo the Great as Charles Dickens.

SCROOGED (1988)

A Christmas Carol for the 1980s, extremely cynical and with more people getting hit in the face with toasters.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993)

Halloween decides to take over Christmas in what has become one of my favorites.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1942)

A surprisingly funny take on World War II from the point of view of Polish actors, that came out only 3 months after Pearl Harbor.

ANNIE HALL (1977)

My favorite romantic comedy of all time, it uses new tricks in every scene to get inside the neurotic heads of its characters.
